Committee reviews Alzheimer's Family Support Group funding request

EASTHAM — The Human Services Advisory Committee heard a presentation from Melanie Braverman, co-founder and Executive Coordinator of Alzheimer's Family Support Group, which serves over 3,000 clients monthly across an organization with 27 staff members. Braverman presented data showing 40.5 percent of Eastham's 5,800 year-round residents are over 65, with 20 percent statistically having mild cognitive impairment and 10 percent having diagnosable dementia. The organization recently experienced a significant funding cut of around $300,000 and provides all services free to families and caregivers, including support groups, community education, phone check-ins, cognitive health screenings, and a social engagement program at Cape Cod Mall with transportation serving 4 to 6 Eastham residents.
Braverman offered to conduct training for first responders on dementia-specific de-escalation techniques.
